Old F250's, Gas Guzzlers and in the heads of US official if something is old , tired and getting less that 18 Miles per gallon its time to go and with a cash for a limited time.It was called cash for clunkers and it was a cash stimulus to get old heavy fuel using vehicles off the roads.
It worked simply, Just drive you vehicle to the nearest depot, hold out you hand, get cash and walk away.
Its something that would be a terrific idea in Australia to alleviate the road of vehicles that should have been scrapped years earlier.
In Saying that it has a negative effect when I view the line up of vehicles that will be broken down into spare part by law. For Aussie standards it represents a average price car yard with some vehicle (e.g the dodge ram) that look perfectly good.
The vehicles are euthanized by a liquid solution containing sand that is placed into the running engine. The VIN number is registered as not for resale and ID plated are destroyed. The vehicle then are place with wreckers whom in turn sell off the parts and profits are kept by them.
What in it for the government in the US? Not much but sales tax on the part is the only shining light.
In Australia in 2009 the government gave us incentives to insulate our homes, this is one idea that the US government actioned that environmentally made a statement and possible removed some dangerous vehicle from the road forever. MMM makes you wonder.
