The Federal Government now provides grants under its LPG Vehicle Scheme of up to
$2,000 for converting privately used vehicles to run on LPG. For more
information click through to the LPG AUTOGAS web site.
LPG Australia has recently issued a CODE OF PRACTICE for LPG Installations on
Motor Vehicles and consumers should ask installers whether work carried out is
in accordance with the Code.
Automotive LPG - autogas - is recognised as the most important and widely
accepted alternative fuel for the automotive sector. It powers almost 10 million
vehicles in more than 53 countries.
Global consumption of autogas is more than 16 million tonnes annually.
Importantly, Australia leads the way with the world's largest per capita
consumption of autogas using approximately 1.2 million tonnes (or 2.3 billion
litres) per annum (115 litres per person per annum).
Autogas is available at more than 3,200 retail automotive outlets around
Australia (see our LPG OUTLET LOCATOR for details).
Autogas is used as a motor fuel because of its inherent environmental benefits.
It has lower exhaust emissions than petrol, costs less and can reduce engine
wear.
These benefits have been recognised by consecutive federal governments for more
than 30 years and bipartisan policy has been to keep autogas free of the excises
added to petroleum fuels. As a result, autogas in Australia sells for up to 50%
less than petrol and diesel.
LPG Australia is currently running a development campaign on LPG Autogas called
"Defender - Lower your fuel costs with LPG" which aims to increase the use of
autogas so that it accounts for 10% of all vehicle fuel used in Australia by
2010. Further detailed information on LPG Autogas for Vehicles can be found on
the LPG AUTOGAS web site at www.lpgautogas.com.au
More than $1 Billion is invested in autogas in Australia (including seaboard and
regional terminals, tankers and service station dispensing facilities).
Engines in all the following vehicle types listed below can be designed or
adapted to run on LPG Autogas. In fact most internal combustion engines are able
to be operated succesfully on LPG Autogas.
- Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, 4WD Vehicles
- Racing Cars, Hot Rods, Dragsters
- Trucks, Buses, Taxis
- Fork-lifts, Generators, Go-Karts
- Lawn Mowers, Stationary Engines, Floor Sweepers
Internationally, government support for gaseous fuels is increasing. In the UK,
France, Germany and Taiwan, new policies make them substantially cheaper than
petrol to promote their use.
The Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) runs a number of incentive based programs
aimed at converting Australia's heavy vehicles (greater than 3.5t Gross Vehicle
Mass (GVM)) to alternative fuels including LPG. The Alternative Fuels Conversion
Program, provides a 50% subsidy toward the difference in price or the cost of
converting commercial vehicles and buses weighing more than 3.5t GVM to LPG or
CNG (compressed natural gas) operation. For more information on the AGO's
alternative fuels programs log onto their web site: www.greenhouse.gov.au
